Cult sci-fi films meet real science in this new film series titled REEL SCIENCE. This January, join the Digital Gym Cinema, Film Geeks SD, the San Diego Natural History Museum, and a lineup of San Diego scientists for a month-long film series that explores scientific themes in cult cinema and provides audiences with the science behind the fiction.

Here’s how it works: We’re pairing cult sci-fi favorites with local scientists for an evening of mind-expanding fun. Before each film we’ll have games, trivia, door prizes, and a chance to interact with our guest scientists, who will contextualize scientific themes explored in the movie by providing corrective commentary – explaining what the filmmakers got right and, in some cases, so very wrong, in portraying concepts from the bleeding edge of scientific inquiry.

This program will take place on Saturdays in January 2017, with theNAT and Digital Gym hosting the program on alternating weekends.

REEL SCIENCE: Altered States

Saturday, January 7, 2017, 7 PM

Location: THE DIGITAL GYM CINEMA – Sold out!

Hosted at Digital Gym, this evening’s program features Altered States, a cinematic trip, so to speak, that follows a Harvard scientist as he begins experimenting on himself with hallucinatory drugs and sensory-deprivation tanks. Janet Maslin of The New York Times described it as “exhilaratingly bizarre. It’s strangeness, which borders cheerfully on the ridiculous, is its most enjoyable feature.”

Neurologist Bradley Voytek will join us to discuss what sensory deprivation chambers do to our brains.

The lobby opens at 7 PM for informal discussions, followed by the film screening at 7:30 PM.

REEL SCIENCE: Weird Science

Saturday, January 14, 2017, 7 PM

Location: THE SAN DIEGO NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

Hosted at theNAT, this evening features the 1980s John Hughes classic Weird Science, which follows the exploits of two hopelessly awkward high school nerds as they hatch a Frankenstein-style plot to build a perfect female companion. Though their experiment proves successful, they get more than what they bargained for and, of course, wackiness ensues.

Geneticist Adam Haberman will join us and discuss the prospects of creating a perfect human. Traits can be screened and modified in human embryos, but where can genetic modification technologies lead us in the future? Scientists are also on the cusp of combining advancements in 3D printing and DNA sequencing, meaning we may be one day live in a world where we’ll be able to print out the perfect mate and ditch the dating apps once and for all.

Museum doors open at 7 PM for informal discussions in the Atrium, followed by the film screening in our giant screen theater at 7:30 PM.

Tickets available through the National History Museum

REEL SCIENCE: Donnie Darko

Saturday, January 21, 2017, 4 PM

Location: THE DIGITAL GYM CINEMA – Sold out!

Hosted at Digital Gym, this evening’s program features time travel cult classic Donnie Darko.  Is Donnie Darko going insane, or is the six-foot monster bunny prophesizing about the end of the world in late-night visions giving Donnie the inside scoop on an impending disaster?

Physicist Daniel Sheehan will shed some light on Donnie’s questions about time travel and on our understanding of time.

The lobby opens at 4 PM for informal discussions, followed by the film screening at 4:30 PM.

REEL SCIENCE: Flash Gordon

Saturday, January 28, 2017, 7 PM

Location: THE SAN DIEGO NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

Hosted at theNAT, this evening we’ll present the 1980 camp sci-fi classic Flash Gordon. Football star “Flash” Gordon boards a small plane and unwittingly steps into an intergalactic battle that involves an evil emperor, a sexy space princess with telepathic gadgets, metal-faced secret police, ill-conceived spaceships galore, and flying soldiers called Hawkmen.

Entomologist Michael Wall will somehow, improbably, tether the wacky exploits of Flash and the Gang back to actual science. Based on clues from the film, what can we deduce about the adaptation and evolution of life on the planet Mongo?

Museum doors open at 7 PM for informal discussions in the Atrium, followed by the film screening in our giant screen theater at 7:30 PM.

Tickets available through the National History Museum
