Acclaimed ALS Movie, TransFatty Lives, Now Playing in San Diego (Jan 8-14)
In this documentary 10 years in the making, internet sensation, DJ, and
filmmaker Patrick O’ Brien (known as TransFatty to his legions of fans), is diagnosed with
ALS. He decides to make a documentary about life after his diagnosis, resulting in a
humorous, touching, and wildly inventive account of a man who refuses to let his disease
define who he is.
At 30, Patrick O’Brien was TransFatty: NYC DJ, Internet personality, and
filmmaker. Then he was diagnosed with ALS (a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s disease). Given 2 to 5
years to live, Patrick braves the unthinkable and turns his camera onto himself. Forcefully
lacking self-pity, he captures the emotion, humor, and absurdity of real life as he makes art,
gets political, falls in love, and fathers a son in this winner of the Audience Award at the
Tribeca Film Festival.

serious illness.” – Dennis Harvey, Variety

Gallagher, L.A. Weekly

“By its end, “TransFatty Lives” leaves no doubt that its hero not only lives to accept his
state, but thrives on it.” – Eric Kohn, IndieWire
