About AFTERGLOW: A semi-regular screening series dedicated to the reflective nature of cinema. Afterglow focuses on genre-defying films that inspire immediate discussion and prolonged consideration. Each screening will be a San Diego premiere, followed by a filmmaker/critic Q&A and paired with an original piece of criticism that deepens the ongoing conversation.
Afterglow #1: The Films of Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn (Q&A w/ Lev after each screening)
L For Leisure (San Diego Premiere)
L FOR LEISURE is an homage to the 90s films of directors like Hal Hartley, Whit Stillman and Eric Rohmer, treating its characters and scenarios as deeply contextualized moving parts and using them to explore ideas about adulthood, lifestyle, alternate universes and sport.
“BRILLIANT…L FOR LEISURE offers a metaphysical dream of pure vision, one that is attainable only through leisure and landscape…That pursuit is itself the essence of cinema.
– Richard Brody, The New Yorker
“Sun-kissed, Whit Stillmanesque” – A.O.Scott, New York Times
“DELIGHTFUL…Like Boyhood and Do the Right Thing, L for Leisure invites us to look back while pointing the way ahead.”
– Melissa Anderson, ARTFORUM
Two Plains and a Fancy (San Diego Premiere)
In this Spa Western, three hapless tourists wander the desolate Colorado landscape of 1893 searching for hot springs, yearning for self care and haunted by Deep Time.
“[Kalman & Horn stake] their own singular claim in the wilds of 21st century surrealism.”
“No verbal or written description can do justice to Two Plains & a Fancy’s best moments, which […] seamlessly render the absurd and sublime one and the same.” – Slant Magazine
“Ravishing.” – Film Comment, Interview with Directors
