Pedro Almodóvar’s crowning screwball farce is an eccentrically comic battle of the sexes in which several scorned women begin to lash out against the men who have wronged them. Almodovar’s most successful comedy features performances from the inimitable Carmen Maura, Rossy de Palma, and Antonio Banderas. Apart of our 5th Anniversary Celebration of Digital Gym CINEMA! Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown tells the story of Pepa—played by the director’s frequent collaborator Carmen Maura—who resolves to kill herself with a batch of sleeping-pill-laced gazpacho after her lover leaves her. Fortunately, she is interrupted by a deliciously chaotic series of events. The filmmaker channeled Hollywood inspiration into his own unique vision, arriving at the irreverent humor and vibrant visual sense that define his work today.
“The women here aren’t afraid to get extreme about love, but in the end, you sense that they are too sound to destroy themselves over the worthless man they have allowed to personify it. That’s what lifts Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown from the amusing to the sublime.” – Boston Globe
“The smiles don’t fade until the finish of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown when we witness Pepa’s realization that she has, in fact, come into her own and taken charge of her own destiny.” – The Los Angeles Times
