The Reel Science Film Series (presented by Digital Gym Cinema and San Diego Natural History Museum) returns for its third edition with a new slate of science-fiction movies. Featured films will be paired with a local scientist who will provide contextualized and corrective feedback about the scientific themes presented at each screening. This week’s screening of THE MARTIAN will feature commentary from Dr. Brian Shotwell, assistant teaching professor of physics at UC San Diego, prior to the film, followed by a Q&A session after the movie.
This screening will take place at San Diego Natural History Museum. Reel Science is made possible by Science On Screen, an initiative of the Coolidge Corner Theater, with major support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
Synopsis: When astronauts blast off from the planet Mars, they leave behind Mark Watney (Matt Damon), presumed dead after a fierce storm. With only a meager amount of supplies, the stranded visitor must utilize his wits and spirit to find a way to survive on the hostile planet. Meanwhile, back on Earth, members of NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring him home, while his crew mates hatch their own plan for a daring rescue mission.
