Security guard Richard Jewell helps save countless lives when a bomb explodes at the 1996 Summer Olympics, but quickly becomes the prime suspect after media organizations report on an F.B.I. investigation into his potential involvement.
During the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, security guard Richard Jewell (played by Paul Walter Hauser) discovers a suspicious backpack under a bench in Centennial Park. With little time to spare, he helps to evacuate the area until the incendiary device inside the bag explodes. Hailed as a hero who saved lives, Jewell’s own life starts to unravel when the FBI names him the prime suspect in the bombing. Clint Eastwood’s controversial biopic examines the cultural and social hysteria that engulfs the life of an ordinary man almost problematically loyal to serving his country.
“This is a morality tale – in a good way, mostly – about the vulnerability of the individual citizen in the face of state power and about the fate of a private person menaced by the machinery of publicity.” – A.O. Scott, The New York Times
[A] fleet, densely textured drama.” – Glenn Kenny, RogerEbert.com
“Richard Jewell works because, decades after the incident, it’s skeptical of the spotlight.” – David Sims, The Atlantic
“The actors transcend the simplifications, and make Eastwood’s 38th feature behind the camera something worth arguing about.” – Michael Phillips, Chicago Sun-Times
