SDAFF 2018 Presents: The Island (November 16)
Dir. Tuan Andrew Nguyen. (Vietnam, 2018, 42 Min., Vietnamese W/ English Subtitles)
Fresh from the Whitney Biennial, a stunning film that weaves historical footage, interviews, and speculative fiction focused entirely on Pulau Bidong, an uninhabitable island that from 1978-1991 became the largest refugee camp post-Vietnam War. Monumental ruins and national debate mix with mythology as the last man on earth encounters a UN scientist washed ashore. Preceded by short film HOÀI (ONGOING, MEMORY).
Friday, November 16: 5:00
SDAFF 2018 Presents: Nervous Translation (November 16)
Dir. Shireen Seno. (Philippines, 2018, 91 Min., Tagalog W/ English Subtitles)
Yael, an eight-year old girl growing up in late 80’s Philippines, confronts miracles and disasters both international and very, very small. With tremendous empathy, imagination, and attention to detail, director Shireen Seno evokes a child’s world as strange and intimate as a dream.
Friday, November 16: 6:10
SDAFF 2018 Presents: Sir (November 17)
Dir. Rohena Gera. (India, 2018, 96 Min., English, Hindi W/ English Subtitles)
A delicate and charming story of thwarted love as widowed villager Ratna takes a Mumbai job as a live-in-maid for handsome Ashwin, recovering from a failed engagement. Transcending savior narratives, Rohena Gera’s latest explores unpredictable agency across modern-day caste divides and the magnetic pull of reinvention.
Saturday, November 17: 12:30
SDAFF 2018 Presents: Girls Always Happy (November 17)
Dir. Yang Mingmin. (China, 2018, 117 Min., Mandarin W/ English Subtitles)
Director-actor Yang Mingming’s feisty new feature pits the cranky crackling wits of mother and daughter, both struggling writers stuck living together in the cramped eavesdropping confines of old Beijing. Their unusual camaraderie snaps with the dry comedy of flawed lovers and ambition hemmed by codependence. Preceded by short film DIRECTOR OF SUCCESS OR: HOW I LEARN TO SHOOT A FILM.
Saturday, November 17: 2:25
SDAFF 2018 Presents: Inland Sea (November 17)
Dir. Kazuhiro Soda. (Japan / USA, 2018, 122 Min., Japanese W/ English Subtitles)
Surrounded by cats in a remote Japanese village, fishing is braided into the lifestyles of all its aging but vivacious residents. A doc that unfolds with easy curiosity and reveals the rhythms and the underlying change of a dwindling way of life.
