The Burke Revival Film and Discussion Series returns for its fourth season with Chasing the Sacred, a three-film exploration of belief, conscience, and moral identity through the lens of landmark cinema.

Presented by UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies in partnership with the Burke Lectureship on Religion & Society and Digital Gym Cinema, the series uses film as a catalyst for public dialogue around some of the most enduring questions of human experience: How do individuals find meaning amid uncertainty? How are moral identities shaped by conflict and displacement? What does conscience require when values are tested?

Each screening pairs a significant work of cinema with a guided discussion led by Rev. Scott Young, curator of the series, whose decades of film programming experience and pastoral perspective bring together cinematic appreciation, ethical inquiry, and reflection on the human condition.

Synopsis: 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of TAXI DRIVER, one of the greatest movies in cinema history. It is iconic for the boost in careers of several of the actors, capturing the dystopian features of New York City, a magnificent score, and memorable dialogue.

TAXI DRIVER thrives in the urban angst post-Vietnam War, the moral topsy turvy post-Watergate, and the cultural revolution generated by rebellious art. TAXI DRIVER functions as a commentary on a fractured geo-political world scrambling to find its way into the future. It lunges toward the grappling for larger meanings in the flawed characters, the moral decay residing in the streets, and in the frame of the penetrating camera. 50 years after its release, it robustly transports us not only into the past, but in it’s perennially prescient eye into the future. Cinema at its most intrusive gaze, stunning beauty in the cinematography,  and simultaneously the way it, in the words of Stephen Spielberg, “crawls up inside you and takes up residence.”  TAXI DRIVER for the ages will be on colorful display to kick off the 4th season of theBurkeLectureship: Revival Film Screening & Discussion.
