Opens on May 20

Director: Laura Herrero Garvín Run Time: 82 min. Rating: Unrated Release Year: 2020 Language: Spanish w/ English Subtitles

Starring: La Mami, Priscilla

Tagline: La Mami takes us inside the ladies’ bathroom-turned-cloakroom of a legendary Mexico City nightclub, the Cabaret Barba Azul. Inside the fluorescently-lit upstairs refuge we meet Doña Olga, known as “La Mami” to the dancers and hostesses of the discotheque below, who keeps watch over the dressing room while remaining a tough-loving confidante and vigilant protector of the girls themselves.

Synopsis: Night after night, La Mami unlocks the door and reveals the guarded restroom of the Cabaret Barba Azul’s dancers. After working for more than 40 years in the nightlife, Doña Olga is now La Mami, the caretaker of the women’s restroom at the mythical Cabaret Barba Azul. Night after night, she takes care of the dancers working to the flow of live music. This restroom is a trusting bubble inside Barba Azul. Today there is a new woman arriving at the restroom. She has a sick son and needs to work. La Mami is both a heartfelt and intimate portrait of Doña Olga and the girls from Cabaret Barba Azul and a perceptive study of labor and collective fatigue which tacitly points to the myriad sacrifices that mothers and caregivers choose to make on the daily. Above all, La Mami reminds us that at the core of group survival are emotional ties and community.

Critic Quotes:

“Immersive and eye-opening.” – Amber Wilkinson, Screen International

“Superb… Amid its textured, occasionally conflict-scarred portrait of the female community, La Mami is rife with sharp, tacit socio-economic criticism of an unequal, patriarchal society in which making joyless business out of pleasure is the best hope many women have.” – Guy Lodge, Variety

“An intimate, often amusing, invariably informative delve into a semi-hidden world—one which very few males ever even glimpse.” – Neil Young, The Hollywood Reporter
