Synopsis: Medium Photo returns to Digital Gym Cinema with an award-winning documentary about Tom Frost, a legendary Yosemite climber, mountain photographer, engineer, conservationist, and family man.

Shot in beautiful black and white, with soft, carefully controlled lighting, the film takes us back to the Golden Age of Yosemite climbing, when a generation of climbers opened new routes on some of the world’s most challenging rock faces.

Frost made history with landmark ascents of El Capitan’s The Nose and the North American Wall. He later participated in international expeditions, including climbs in the Himalayas alongside Sir Edmund Hillary.

The film combines remarkable mountain photography with a portrait of Frost’s life, work, peers, and family. Its images recall the Yosemite photographs of Ansel Adams, while its monumental landscapes draw comparisons with the mountain films of Leni Riefenstahl.

Frost’s work extended beyond climbing and photography. Drawing on his experience as a climber and engineer, he helped develop innovative climbing equipment before turning his attention to photographic lighting. He co-invented the Illuminata Lightbank, an early softbox lighting system associated with the development of the Chimera brand. Frost was also an advocate for environmental responsibility in climbing and supported the principle of leaving no trace on the mountain.
