Dates with showtimes for SD Film Geeks and the American Academy of Neurology Present: The Elephant Man
  • Tue, Apr 8

Director: David Lynch Run Time: 124 min. Release Year: 1980

Starring: Anne Bancroft, Anthony Hopkins, John Gielgud, John Hurt, Wendy Hiller

Synopsis: David Lynch’s haunting and empathetic The Elephant Man tells the story of Joseph Merrick, a man living with severe deformities in Victorian England. Born with a congenital condition that left him visibly different, Merrick survives by exhibiting himself as the “Elephant Man” in traveling sideshows—until he is discovered by Dr. Frederick Treves, a surgeon who brings him into the heart of London society. As Treves and others come to know Merrick, they uncover a deeply intelligent and gentle soul whose humanity challenges the assumptions of an often-cruel world.

This special screening is presented as part of Dr. Alison Christy’s History of Neurology and Film class and as an enhancement to the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting. We will explore how film shapes and explores public perception of neurological illness and disability. Based on a true story, The Elephant Man explores themes of bodily difference, exploitation, compassion, and medical ethics—inviting viewers to confront their own discomforts and assumptions about dignity, otherness, and the meaning of care. The evening includes a pre-film talk by Dr. Eric Leonardis (Salk Institute for Biological Studies) on the uncanny valley and societal discomfort with bodily difference, followed by a post-screening Q&A. A compelling night of cinema, science, and ethics—open to the public!
