Boasting an oeuvre spanning coming-of-age, sci-fi, mystery, psychological horror, and even historical drama, Jessica Hausner subverts genre expectations and incorporates thematic undercurrents of faith and alienation to craft intimate narratives around female protagonists grappling with inner conflict and motivated by a desire to connect with others. With her sharp attention to the intricacies of human behavior and a dark sense of humor, Hausner strikes a fine balance between bold storytelling choices and compassionate recognition of her characters—yet her lens never flinches at the cruelties and uncertainties of everyday life.
